SVE w/ Juliana Hatfield
SVE is psyched to be opening up for the force that is Juliana Hatfield.
Fast on the heels of April 2018’s acclaimed “Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John” comes Juliana Hatfield’s new self-produced all-originals album “Weird”. Freda Love Smith (Blake Babies, Sunshine Boys) and Todd Philips (Lemonheads, The Juliana Hatfield Three) each played drums on multiple songs while Hatfield played all of the other instruments (and some additional drums).
“Weird” is an album about disconnection and discomfort. “I often feel cut-off from other people, from my feelings, from technology, from popular culture,” says Hatfield. “I feel weird, I feel like I’m dreaming my life and that I am going to wake up some day.”
While Hatfield’s songs—melodies and lyrics and structures– are meticulously crafted, her guitar parts are loose and sometimes a little unhinged, first-take expressions of this temperamental uneasiness.
“Personally, I feel like a malfunctioning machine. There’s a screw or two loose. I want my guitar playing to reflect that.”
SVE w/ Love Love & Rick Berlin
SVE w/guest drummer Rich Dart! Love Love: We love love, and we love murder. At least, writing about it. Chris asked Jefferson to come over and help her finish a murder-ballad she was working on, and… LOVE LOVE was the result, a rock band with dual male-female lead vocals, psych-country-soul overtones, and a penchant for poignant, often macabre lyrics
Rick Berlin: “Rick Berlin is a giant on the Boston music scene. His colorful songwriting and strong stage presence have influenced countless other artists since the early 1970s, when his innovative band Orchestra Luna harnessed a potent blend of theater and music years before the Tubes. Throughout the decades and the shifting fortunes of the business Rick has continued to make music with intelligence and integrity, building an international reputation around his knotty, singular piano playing, straight-from-the-heart singing and a style of character-based songwriting that’s drawn favorable comparisons to the likes of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen— although Rick rocks more than both. . . . Rick’s still busy creating. . . . Rick with The Nickel & Dime Band’s Always on Insane (2012) When We Were Kids (2014) is with a full, intense, rocking 8-piece band.”

120 Minutes of College Radio: A Tribute to the 1980s Underground
Some of Connecticut’s best original bands and songwriters pay tribute to the golden age of college radio and the underground scene that launched bands like the Replacements, the Cure, REM, the Pixies, Miracle Legion, and the Smiths.
In 1991 Nirvana’s album “Nevermind” shot to number one on the charts and went platinum. Almost immediately, there were grunge fashion spreads in magazines, and commercial modern rock stations sprouting up all across America. "Alternative music” was suddenly a commercially viable trend. But in the 1980s, this wasn’t the case; you had to work a lot harder to find new and inspiring bands, tuning into lower wattage college stations on the “left of the dial,” scouring the CMJ charts for new bands, or staying up very late on Sunday nights to watch MTV’s groundbreaking “120 Minutes.”
Performers include: Frank Critelli, Chris Bousquet (American Elm), Lys Guillorn, The Sawtelles, The Shellye Valauskas Experience (Duo), Dave Schneider (the Zambonis, the Levees), Bruce and LoraLee Crowder, Steve Bunovski (The Naomi Star, Hannah Cranna), Pigeon English, Anne Castellano, Hugh Birdsall (The Reducers, Dogbite), Jeff Cedrone (Floating Lanterns, Light Upon Blight)
